I restarted my 125 about 3 years ago using South down sand from Home Depot. Since then I have added allot of new live rock to the system and its been running good.

However, I never seeded the DSB with live sand. Do I need to now or do you think it already has the bacteria from being around the rock and in a running system for years?

I would think that adding live sand would not have much of an effect on your system, if any at all. Something running that long is sure to have some sort of colony in it already :) Especially since you have live rock in there too!

    Good luck w/ your reef!

3 years? There is definetly a seeded bacterial colony in the sand bed.

That's what I thought, Thanks guys. I just wasn’t 100% if live sand had something bacteria wise that nothing else would have. Sounds like I am good to go.:)

Now someone tell me where to find some nice RBTA ;D

Back many years ago in OKC I had a 20 long reef barebottom. I had a perforated 1/2" pvc along the bottom back operated by a maxijet. It blew all the waste to the front and every morning I would siphon it off (about a quart) and repenish. It was the cleanest, healthiest tank I had ever run. I had bunches of x-mas tree worms (on Florida rock when it was available) and watched them spawning. The females (I guess that's what you would refer them to) let off these tiny, brown balls that exploded into micro balls (eggs) and the males let off a milky sperm. It was awesome.
