So the tank I'm going to set up is a standard 55 gallon and it came with one of the classic ornamental black iron stands common for freshwater - which leads to a couple questions.

With the addition of rock, heavier water, etc. will this stand still be enough to hold the tank? Also living in the midwest I know what road salt does to cars, so do I need to be worried about rust on this framework as well?

If rust is an issue could I just put say 1/2 plywood around that using the iron stand as the framework, also having a piece of wood on top so there is no direct contact from tank to iron?

    Any other thoughts?

salt is very corrosive and will eat that iron stand and weaken the integrity. would be best to find something that doesnt react with salt. wouldnt want to come home and find your tank on the floor.
