Can I use the kitty litter alone as a DSB or is it necessary for me to put a layer of sand over it??

    I have to bite ...

I'm assuming that "DSB" means "Deep Sand Bed".

So, how did you come up with "DKLBWPSS" (deep kitty litter bed with possibly some sand)?

Before even starting to answer your question, I'd be concerned with unkown ingredients / additives in kitty litter.

I can't answer the original question but yes you can use the unscented natural kitty litter, its clay and good for the tanks. You can try packleader, he might be able to answer your question. I'm pretty sure he used it in his fuge.

the thing is that the litter will make mud not sand so i do believe u can have sand on top like it is in nature thats how i did my dsb with miracle mud for first 2 inchs and sand 3" high different bacteria needs different environments sand for nitrification and mud for denitrification so a true dsb would have both well the sand would be made from fine cc delivered by fish going number 2

The ingredients say 100% clay. Tangster has used these as well. non scented non clumpin plain old clay cat litter. Same thing as mud basically but a WHOLE lot cheaper at 3 dollars a bag compared to 40. I dumped the cat litter however and just gave in and bought a bag of dry aragonite sand, smallest grain size. I tore down my old fuge and made a 10g fuge with a DSB of only 3.5 in, im hoping this will be sufficient with the grain size. I will throw in bout 20 dwarf ceriths when its cycled a bit and can support them, so they can keep the substrate churned. I have chaeto and gracilaria growing in there and was able to fit it under my tank. So much nicer than havin that modded rubbermaid container next to the tank. Just not as much water volume. There is only 5 gallons in the fuge after displacement from the sand and I have put a few pieces of small rock in there in hopes to seed it. I considered dolomite, limestone screenings, types of sand and kitty litter but in the end it wasnt worth either the risk of impurities or the mess so after attempting to rinse dirt off of clay lol and pouring half of it down the drain in the process. I took out the bucket and dumped the kitty litter. Too bad my cat couldnt use it cause it was soaked.
