Do I really need the sponge in my ac70 on my 46 gallon bow? The main reason I ask is it actually got clogged up in less than a week and overflowed onto my floor a little. I would rather not have it. My tank is just about done cycling so I'm getting excited to maybe get a CUC. Also what would your opinions be on just have carbon and gfo pellets in the ac70? I have just the carbon that came with it and chemipure as of now. Thanks guys.

FWIW, I only have GAC in media bags hanging in my HOB (Whisper 60). Works perfectly fine for me. My theory is that everything that gets trapped by mechanical filtration is food for something in my tank, and when it gets trapped, it still breaks down into DOCs, thus creating nitrates.
