since converting my wet/dry to a sump.. Ive removed 99% bioballs, the cylinder style foam overflow filter and the foam block from my sump. my question is do I even need the foam pad in my drip tray? I do have some lr rumble below that, and cheato/mangroves with some more LR rumble at other end of sump past my return pump and skimmer.. I also plan on dosing copepods down there later this week to increase my population for my DT. will the some pods getting sucked down the overflow box towards sump get trapped in that filter pad as I clean that every 2 days with freshwater in the sink.. thanks whats everyone opinions?

Lots of different opinions on this...I personally did the same thing you did, but with no mechanical filtration there were small particles flying around. I started using a 200 micron bag. Tank stays crystal clear. My fuge return bypasses the bag.

I think you will loose pods in the sponge

First... pods are everywhere... no real need to dose them, they will multiply.

I don't use any floss.... but you have rubble and it needs to stay clean just like balls. Personally I would remove the floss and rubble. Let the skimmer pick up the slack.

true, never thought about it like that. just let it run empty.. I do use 2 filter bags in the drip tray.. one gfo, other one is carbon..

Just make sure the carbon is not being beat to death, it will dissolve in heavy flow.

I used to use very fine floss... now I just clean my skimmer. There is more stuff in the water... not much at all... but it is all food for coal and everything else. Good flow keeps detritus suspended for the skimmer to remove. Everything eats in the mean time.

Now the rubble later will provide habitat for pods, but before the skimmer is not needed. I assume you have a single pass sump with return on the end.

I just removed all my lr rumble from under drip tray.. man its loud! water driping on water.. my set/dry is a single pass like:

    Driptray
    LR rumble / return pump /skimmer/ mini-fuge "lr rumble"chaeto&mangrove

I will be putting pods in that last area.

Mine goes from the overflow to the filtersock which is in the middle of the bioballs, then to the live rock rubble, then to the skimmer then to the return each one a seperate chamber as I have 2 sump boxes connected together .I stopped useing the foam a long time ago and stopped haveing nitrate problems.

I agree... now when I had a wet dry... there was no bioballs, and I had to put floss on the lower tray where the bioballs would sit just to break the fall and quiet the noise. I'm no fan of noise so if you have to use floss then that is how it is. I tried other stuff too like a piece of plexi for the water to go down. Do what you can, options are limited in wet/drys and what you have to do with the water routing and water falling.
