    That totally sucks. I hate using heaters and often have my tanks a little on the cold side to avoid them. It's the one piece of equipment that seems to fail and with such dire consequences.

    Whenever I see a cheap Ranco, I pick then up.

    Sorry for the loss. That must have really sucked finding that.

    I have heard way too many bad things about this heater, and with the expense of it, I opted to go another route. I went with Finnex Titanium heaters...had 2, one bad out of the box, another went bad within 3 weeks. I have since gone to the "cheapo's" as they don't have the extra electronic crap to fry and malfunction. I have 2 Ebo Jagers in there now, controlled by a RKL as a just in case measure.

    I am so sorry about your troubles. On the plus side, I've dealt with JBJ on 2 occasions due to faulty equipment, and they were more than accommodating with replacement/refunds, whatever the case may be. Customer Service was great. I hope everything works out for you.

    the funny thing is, with all the recent equipment failures that we have had (135g tank seam blow dumping all water on floor, this, and the pump failing on my FOWLR tank) you would think we were buying used or cheap stuff. I have never bought a piece of used fish equipment out of fear of this happening.........now I am considering it :}

    I bought a used heater...and it died 2 days before leaving for vacation for 13 days...got a replacement overnighted(Finnex), and well I said above those troubles. I don't knock used equipment...just ask some good questions about it, to see the persons knowledge of the hobby to ensure that whatever you are buying was kept in good condition.

    I have bought many used pieces of equipment (tank included), and have yet to have a MAJOR failure. However, 4 out of the 10 BRAND SPANKING NEW devices I have bought have failed withing a month. Go figure. Made in ____.

    I have 2 of the cheapies in my tank and have been looking to upgrade to a better system with the new 150 going on line. I will take your advise into consideration with my purchase. Did you have a chiller on the system? I would think that would counteract a runaway heater. Best of luck with the restocking. That sucks.

    We are running out of heaters to buy! I've remove all of the stealth ones. Had another brand go bad on me this week (not sure of the brand off hand). I had it set at 75 and it went to 82 when I caught it. I never hit 80s on any of my tanks and this was in a 10 gallon uncycled hospital tank with a sick fish on antibiotics. He was gilling like a big dog.

    WOW!!

    To date I have had good luck with ehiem/jagar and Fluval heaters. Really liking the Fluval i have in my Salt at the moment.. Plastic cage and digital display that can be read from a distance. Even flashes LF if it senses Low Flow. Copepods seems to like the caging too as I see my mandrin snacking away up and down it.
