A friend of mine has an open brain that seems to have shriveled up a little over the weekend while he was away. I don't have a picture, but does this sound like it could be molting? Do these corals even molt? Everything else in his tank is doing great and has been for some time, so I don't suspect any drastic water changes.

No coral molts. That's a crustacean thing.

Not sure about the feeding details, but I'll ask? I thought certain corals molt, like leathers. So are you saying that brains don't do this normally, they'll just grow?

Mine put out little feeder tentacles at night, and expand to cover more area on the sand during the day. They don't molt.

They need to be fed a couple times a week; make sure your friend is feeding it. They won't survive forever without food because they aren't as powerful of a photosynthesizer like euphyllids (torch, frogspawn).

I feed mysis and a coral mix. They grab the mysis and not the coral mix because it's bigger chunks; they don't grab smaller foods very well. Give them something around 1/2 the size of the mouth or a bit bigger.

right after the lights go out and all the fish dart off to there burrows i slip in a little piece of silversides right on top of its mouth, then keep my hand in the tank shooing my cleaner shrimp till it pulls the piece into its mouth. otherwise it will get taken from him.
