Having hobbies makes life more fun. I also have many very expensive hobbies, golf being my favorite, but life would be much duller without them. Just ask yourself this, what would you be doing without them and how would it effect your attitude? Me and my family love to stare at the tank it brings me a calming peace. I also get much satisfaction and joy from being outside and enjoying the outdoors golfing. So for me my hobbies have a great impact on mood/attitude in life. I'm a much happier man with them than without.

I love my tank. I enjoy working on it. It costs money. Sometimes a lot of money. Why do we work to earn money than to live and enjoy what makes us happy?
When I get to a point where I feel that maintaining a tank is more 'work' than 'play' I will stop spending money on it and let it to someone that can hopefully give it the same dedication.

Sounds like some very dedicated individuals on here. ;D

Otty, I don't understand your comment about jumping into something befoer knowing whether or not I like it??????

Man I've been doign this for 5 years. I would say that would qualify as not jumping into something before I know. Maybe it's a difference of perception. Don't know... :-/

The fact is I love this hobby. Yes, it is expensive but I know of very few other thigns I do that are more relaxing for the money. The only other thing I can think of is spending $1500 on gear to walk around in the woods with my backpack on just to camp where no one is around. Sounds silly to some but it's my "release" just like my tank is. I sometimes question what we're doing with these animals though. I hope the comments are right about them having a better chance of survival in our tanks than the ocean. I'm still heartbroken to have lost my tang. He was really coming into the pesonality thing. Would follow me all around the tank. I would be sitting there watching TV and look up and there he is 1 foot from my face just looking at me. Can't describe it I guess.

I know one thing, I will never offer my QT tank as a holding tank for someone again. This took all of my options away for treatment of the poor guy.

Buddy, anyone who has a couple of yrs under their belt with this hobby has had that thought pass threw they're head at one time or another. I can tell you that I am no exception. Alot of the responses on this thread holds merit and I agree with all of them. Hey, EVERYTHING dies, no one or thing is immortal, thats why we need to enjoy them/it while they are alive. Money......what is money? A paper with a specific amount of valve that CANNOT be transfered to the next life or beyond the grave. Trust me, I've tried!....lol We all need hobbies that will make us happy, fullfilled, important, relaxed, content, distraction, gratified and last but not least, persevere. Not giving up and continuing the course. If we were to live without hobbies, I think that we would be so boring/bored. I think you shoud stick with it, besides if you gave up now, your wife will find a "better" use of the money. Like new shoes and stuff.;D

Living without a hobby isn't really living at all.

Yes musicians put no price on their equip.. well the smart ones. I disagree that you will never get out what you put in.. moneywise yeah.. but experience, knowledge, satisfaction, etc. you get all of these and more. I've spent well over $1000 on my 16g nano, and it's only been up 4 months. I don't regret any of it..

I used to have allot of freshwater tanks before I got into salt water over 10 years ago, I started to get into reefs about 6 years ago, I think with all the money I've spent on this hobby I probably could have bought a nice house but it's like any hobby you always have to have one more thing..then after you buy something you say "thats it i'm not buying anything else " until the next week comes.:cheesy:

Yup, I agree with the musician's point of view. Another hobby of mine is music. I took up the drums about ten years ago and have spent a great deal of money putting my kit together. Next is bass. Just trying to figure out how to do this along with the fish tanks. But Luna is absolutely correct. Money is just money. As long as the bills are paid, the rest is a free for all.
