Do UV lights kill pods?

I've used UVs on my FOWLR tank for years and I have one on my current mix reef, however I haven't turned it on in over a year and a half now. I got it when I first setup my tank because someone recommended it to help with some algae issues...I'm still no expert but now that I have a bit more experience with reef tanks I personally don't believe a UV sterilizer is needed on a reef tank, I know some reefers will not agree but in my opinion it does more harm than good on a reef tank that is setup correctly.
