Congress is trying to shut down the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Project. I am disappointed about this because the bay is essential to life around here. Also, I like Maryland Blue Crabs and I want to be able to enjoy them for a long time yet...

    What do you guys think

congress is full of id**ts and we have nobody to blame but ourselves.
the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Project is designed to protect economic and environmental viability of the entire mid atlantic region that depends on the chesapeake watershed. And considering my tax forms asked me for a donation its just politics as usual grabbing at any pot of money they can.

The Chesapeake is one of the most polluted water ways, it needs a lot of help. One major issue has been a disapearance of the wet lands around the bay. They act like a natural filter absorbing nitrates and phosphates, but farmland as been replacing those wetlands.

i wrote this letter just now to them...

    Attention: United States Congress
In regards to: Chesapeake Bay Restoration Project

The United State’s government, being a federal republic, implies that the wishes of the people whom take residency under its name are heard and considered in any executive decisions Congress makes. As a citizen, I am voicing my views on the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Project.
I reside in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, am a full time student, and as an employee of a company that produces environmentally safe products for the benefit of the Chesapeake Bay, I feel it is essential the program receive further funding. Maryland alone has lost more than 75 percent of its wetlands. Overall, the Bay has lost 98 percent of its oysters, about 90 percent of grasses, and nearly 50 percent of forest buffers, all due to high levels of nitrogen pollution (Chesapeake Bay Foundation | Save the Bay). As you know, when the Bay Restoration Project was set up in 1985, one of the main goals to be achieved was a reduction of nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorous, entering the Chesapeake Bay. As recently as 2008, the states of Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia were only able to meet a 67% efficient nitrogen removal process (Chesapeake Bay Program - A Watershed Partnership). A large quantity of this nitrogen introduction stems from inefficient septic systems. With the new low-Nitrogen septic systems, the steps taken by a wastewater treatment plant are implemented to the water while it is entering the septic system. The use of these septic systems will drastically increase the efficiency of the wastewater treatment plants because less nitrogen pollution will be present.
Additionally, the development of the new nitrogen reducing tanks has produced a positive effect on the local economy. With the “green” movement, most people are choosing to install this low-nitrogen septic system. With a constantly increasing demand for these tanks, my company has been able to supply a greater amount of septic tanks. This directly affects our local economy because none of my employees are laid off and they will continue to put money back into the economy.
I am asking that you use your congressional oversight to disperse funds to the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Project because it not only helps to reduce pollution in the already fickle ecosystem of the Chesapeake Bay but also because it allows for our local economy to be less effected by the current financial situation.

Nice letter, it would be better to send it to you representative or senator though, they can do more.

Didn't know any of this was going on. I'll have to read up on it. As a conservationist (yup, a huge "tree huger"), I believe we should spare no expense when it comes to environments that we've impacted negatively. Well written, Dingo.

yeah, I was pressed for time on such a short notice though... a guy I know from the program is going to present in front of congress tomorrow and is going to read my letter to them so I figure it is going to be more effective this way than just to one single senator
