Maybe you need to watch your fish all day and catch all their turds before they get to the bottom of the tank......LOL, J/K!

    I have bio balls.
I have thought about that too, but think about this. My amnonia and nitrites are ALWAYS at zero, which means that it is working properly. The LR and LS are also doing there share. I know ppl that have had bio balls for 12 yrs without even cleaning them, let along, replacing them.

Its your convict blenny aka engineer goby. They keep the sand so stirred up that nothing has time to settle in. I got rid of mine when it started covering corals with sand.

BioBalls are very very good at performing the nitrogen cycle. In a reef you dont need that so much. Start pulling them a little bit at a time and I bet you a nickel that your nitrates start coming down. Your liverock will take up the slack if you do it slowly.

If it doesn't work then throw 'um back in.

BTW can we please throw that old inch per gallon thing out. Its such a ridiculous broad rule that its about as useful as a swing arm hydrometer. Really, do you think that a 180 could properly house a 60inch epaulette shark? Not likely. Not without a 180 gallon Wet/Dry. Or how about a 90 housing two 2 Volitan's Lionfish? Also not likely. Or a 90 holding a 16" Sohol Tang?

maybe the combonation of 1 or 2 fish to much, the goby mixing the sand, maybe feeding a lil more just to make sure everyone eats, and the bioballs and to add one more maye not a variety of cleaners(sand cleaners, algae eating off glass and rock.)maybe all that dunno tho im clueless after that.:confused:lol
