Does RO/DI water really kill off green hair algae? My tank looks awful, so I set up another tank with RO/DI water to save my last few corals. There is still some gha on the corals, I did pull and scrubbed off most gha but dose DI work? I've never seen a tank look so bad. My tank used to look amazing, and I used well water. Since I moved 2 months ago I have another well but, there is no water softener in the house yet like in my old house. After my water softener is in, I'll try the well again.

RO/DI water will help a lot because it does not have the phosphates and other nasties in the water that helps supply the algea with the nutrients. Using the RO/DI water is the first step. After that you can add a phosban reactor, and also beef up your clean up crew. What size tank do you have and what kind of CUC do you have?

Using well water is really bad for salt water, ro/di water is a must. Well water depending on where you live has chlorine, and other minerals that are bad for your tank and produce algae at a phenomenal rate. Ro/di is the best because it removes the dissolved particles in the water before you put it in your tank making it as pure as possible. With a water change of 20% and a 10% every 4days till you reach a total of 70% you can go back to your regular water change periods but with only ro/di water.

Rodi does not kill gha . The purpose is that it does not introduce additional nutrients(namely phosphate) which are responsible for feeding the gha . What are your parameters? If it's as bad as you say I'm sure you have excessive nitrate and phosphate and you need to get that under control. Rodi is prevention not a cure but as they say " an ounce of prevention is a pound of cure" . You may need to invest in a better skimmer, bio-beads and/or phosban. Good luck
