How do I know if my tank needs a protien skimmer? I have a 40 gallon and run a hob filter with carbon. I just notice the top of my water looks wierd even though all parameters are spot on good. If I need a skimmer can I still run the filter or is that an $80 waste? Also what is a good brand with links please looking to spending around $100-$200. Thanks!

If the surface of your water is getting a layer of film on it then I would increase surface agitation with a Powerhead. The film is proteins that can accumulate at the surface. Also most tanks benefit from the use of skimmers. They help export the proteins you are seeing and will keep your tank cleaner. I run ASM skimmers on all my tanks but Reef Octopus makes good skimmers at a decent price. There are resident experts on the newest skimmers here so hopefully one of them will chime in on a good quality skimmer for your budget.

Thanks for the info! Yeah it's like a film on the surface we have two powerheads on either side of the tanks but i'm definetely going to look into a skimmer.

Yeah sounds like you need a skimmer... I take it you don't have a sump? If you don't have one I recommend to hydor slim skim...

No we don't have a sump for it. We're upgrading to a 90 in a year or so though and will put a sump in that.

I have a 40 breeder as well. I use the CPR BakPak HOB on mine and I love it. I know others that use the Hydor Slimskim as well and success with it.

Try pointing one of the Powerheads toward the surface. Even when running a skimmer this will still be a problem that could block the ammount of light your tank receives.Good luck.:)
