I'm doing a couple day blackout to help improve cyano outbreak and was wondering if running just my actinics would hurt or interfere with the blackout?I hate not seeing my tank at all. It's only been 1 day and i'm getting impateint!!! lol...Or should i just leave them off, cause i was under the impression that there just used for eye appealing color, not for photosynthesis.

Cyano is a bacteria and IME isn't dependent on lighting. To fight it cut down your feeding, increase your flow and make sure your RO/DI filter is putting out 0 TDS.

I'm not trying to disagree,as i do appriciate the input, but an earlier topic this week indicated that it feed off of both(light and nutreints)so my blackout is intended to be the iceing on the cake after adding phos remover, increasing flow, couple water changes, and reduced feedings. But the question i have is just in general-does the actinics have any lighting value other than being pleasing to the eye.

Then that tells me they provide some photosythesis,so i'll go ahead and leave them off(which is driving me crazy!!)as i don't want to interupt the blackout(theres also a little gha that i'm nipping in the bud as well)Thanks to both of you for your answers.

Thanks Steve, that was very interesting,i'm definately gonna stay patient and follow through with the blackout,i'm not real worried about the corals, but i'm afraid the actinic will defeat the purpose of the the blackout,so i will definately keep em off.But didn't know how much the blue spectrum had to do with the corals feeding and health. Thanks for the info
