GA Aquarium swears by them, so they must do something good.... I like them and the next time I'm down at my boat I'm gonna snag some out of the canal.

They are a good thing, they suck up excessive nutrients faster that cheto. As far as trimmings go, these things grow so slow you most likely will never have to trim them. I have been growing them in my pond outside in the summer for at least 10 years, funny thing I never kept them at the end of summer just tossed in the trash and bought new ones since they wont make it though the winter here. This year they go right back into my sump!

But if you want them to bush out and not become a stick with leaves you have to do what is called "tip" them once in a while, as with any other plant you clip the growing tips off.

I wait till mine have about 6 or 8 leaves on them then I clip the grow tip off. This will cause them to branch out and after the new growth has the same amount of leaves I do the same, and so on and so on. But like I said this could take a year before you have to clip the second tips off.

I keep some in my sump and have never heard anything bad about them. They seem easy enough to keep alive and eat up excessive nutrients.
