A few months ago I put an Eshopps sump on my tank. The filter bags need to be changed quite often but and 12-14 each it gets expensive after a while. It says they can be cleaned a few times before being changed but it seems like a real pain in the ass. Anyone have any suggestions?

Throw them in the washer with a little bleach.Just make sure they are rinsed and dry before reusing them.

I used to bleach mine all the time.
Like you it scared me a little so I would rinse them in fw with a little prime(dechlorinator) just in case.;)

    Are they regular filter socks?
That sounds really expensive for socks.
I rinse my socks a little throw them in a pile and put them all in the washer once there's a bunch of them needing washed. No detergent if course.

Well, if you didn't see my other thread, I actually had an emergency because I didn't clean my filter sock! Thought I had a leak in the tank, drained my ATO reserve. Turned out to be my filer sock was overflowing!

Been there with the over flow.... especially after an algae cleaning and turkey baster blast of the settled areas... I now have redesigned my sump ( revision #3) so if it overflows it cant run out of the sump... I buy my 100Mic filter socks( 4" X 7") from Grainger ( P/N 1EUE1).. they are polyester and I rinse them under the faucet daily( after turning them inside out) and toss them once a month when I change the carbon and phose ban... a bag of 5 is like $25... I also have been afraid to do the wash thing with bleach.. I also have wondered at how effectively a cleaning can be thinking that tiny particles are wedged in the filter... most likely over thinking it on my part..

I rinse mine in faucet water then I throw them in the washer without any detergent or bleach. They come out really clean. Bleach can be used but I would dip it in prime before putting it back in the sump. The eshoppes filter socks are expensive so I try to make them last

They arent normal filter socks. They are actually really thick and solid socks.

I think they are 200 micron and I came very close to the over flow issues once because I didnt think the socks would clog like they did and as fast as the did.

Roccus, are the bags from grainger like the eshopps rectangle bags?

Thanks a lot for the help guys.
