I've been looking at pictures of people's tanks and most people just let algae grow all over the back glass. I try to always keep my back glass clean, it's annoying to do but i think it's worth it. Does anyone else do this or am I the only one?

I started out with allowing coraline algae to grow on my back glass, but it became ugly IMO, not very natural looking, I know it's a glass box, but still. Now, I regularly clean and scrape my glass and like the clean look much better. But it is a personally opinion, so you will probably get a lot of them.

when i first bought my setup, i got it used and the back was covered in coraline and i liked the look of it. but after transporting it to my place i figured i'd start with a clean slate and scraped it all off. took me about an hour out on my driveway scraping away with a razor blade and hosing it out. now i've been up and running for 4 months now and i hardly have any coraline algae on the back but a fair amount of green algae. i figured the coraline couldn't grow cause the green stuff was there so now i'm cleaning one algae to let another one grow :D so your question was: do i care about the algae on the back glass? lol

I let mine grow on the back, I feel like it helps my pod population. I always see them around algae compared to clean glass.

This is not a literal answer to your question, as I have a BioCube with black plastic on the back of the display area. I do, however, care about algae growing in the rear of the display. I scrub algae that will come away with a toothbrush off, but since I can't quickly remove it with a magfloat and can't scrape it freely without scratching, I tend to leave anything that doesn't come off with the toothbrush. Plenty of spirorbids back there, but they're at least very slightly beneficial and yet another topic of conversation for the curious minds of friends and friends' children that view the tank.

I am a definite member of the "clean tank club"!! As others have said, it is a personal preference, but I think that the colors of my tank "pop" more against the bright blue background as opposed to the purple/pink look of coralline.

Although there are some here that have the back completely covered with coralline and it does look ok, its just not for me.

But I also take the power heads out every month and clean them too......yes, I know.......got a little OCD going on here....

    I'm with bluemoon.
When I set up my aquarium I left room behind the rocks so I could clean back there.
Personal preference but a purple background just looks unatural to me. Love the blue.
If you have an aquarium with the wall of rocks hiding the whole background then sure it doesn't really matter.

I do not like purple round spots on the front and sides of my tank either.

I'm in the process of covering the back of my tank with xenia. So far 3 stalks have taken hold and are moving up towards the light . . . now if I can just get a couple thousand more I'll be in business 8)

If I'm in the mood I'll clean it off, otherwise I just leave it. I usually leave it because it's easier....but it does make the tank look a lot prettier when I do remove it!
