all it does is bind out chloramines (which are harmful to fish gills)...
it doesnt take out the phosphates (which is why you should use RODI)

Unless its actually able to pull out all of the excess metals, minerals and sediments out of tap water miraculously, I would have to say don't even bother with it.
If you really want to know if your Tap water is safe, just test it. I learned the hard way that the water in my apartment was safe, but the water in my house wasnt. Algae blooms GALORE!
Also, if your tap water contains copper....its not fun.:(

Totally agree, all the tap water treatments do is make the water safe for fish and inverts, it doesn't take anything out or prevent unwanted minerals and compound from entering the tank.

well if you use tap water and it has phosphates or other "bad" minerals in it then they will build up over time and hair algae will grow... or worst case scenario, the minerals will build up to a toxic level and kill stuff in your tank

To set up a RO/DI unit, all you need is the unit and get either a drain fitting, a more permanent application, or a garden hose fitting with you can fit on most faucets with a little modification.

Water conditioners remove free chlorine and bind the ammonia, thats about it. They do absolutely nothing to improve water quality.

Take a look at the Pro Plus found here, easily the best value on a reef quality RO/DI system today.
