Inacurate, ICH is not in every tank, only the ones its introduced into. Also if fish are removed from your tank for a period of six weeks, ICH will die off and never return.

QT is a great idea as you can treat all your fish at the same time (even one that appear to be healthy), and remove ICH permanently. Keep in mind, even though fish appear to be healthy, it doesn't mean they aren't infected.

Thanks everyone for your input, you guys are great!

I need to add a couple more peices of live rock and do some better aquascaping tomorrow anyway so I think I'll just move all three to the QT and leave them there for 6 weeks or so in hypo. Thanks again

i would not leave them in hypo for that long as it will cuase kidney failure. and ich has been known to survive up to 9 weeks in some cases.
raise the temp to speed up the ichs life

ich life cycle is 6-8 weeks, a few slow ones may hit week 9, not the majority tho. but you said you were going for a ich free setup.

personally i think you going the rather extreme route for not even being able to diagnose the ich with a naked eye but by animal behavior.

all it takes is a new piece of live rock or new fish to reintroduce it, i think what your doing is similar to trying to exterminate all the mosquito in your back yard because you kid got a bug bite. :-/

Hah! I won't disagree; I've read plenty of arguments for and against this sort of treatment; I think I'll keep a close eye on the situation and if it gets worse, or if my clowns start showing signs of ich, to the QT they go! If she gradually gets better and the clowns seem fine, I'll leave them in.

Next question though, if this is ich, will I wake up one morning to a dead fish, or will there be more signs, ie more spots, to show that the tangs health is declining, giving me a chance to try the QT w/hypo method?

more white spots or noticiable white spots, its usually easy to see it on tangs
most tangs will get covered for a day or two before they die, look like they have white chicken pocs. try the garlic thing, it helps. even if the tang doesnt eat it will help the clownfish

There has been about 3 studys on how long it would take for the kidney failure to happen. It takes many months for this to happen, even a prolonged 9 week stay wouldn't cause kidney failure. Also when placed back into regular SG water, the weakening of the kidney system recovers quickly. (I'll post my source on this tonight I gotta goto work in a little while)

It would be good to place all your fish into QT during the hypo treatment. As the ich will feed on any remaining animals in your display tank. But will die from starvation w/o anything to eat.

I too have had to deal with the ick problem a couple of times. I purchased a small clown and a small hippo. All seemed well for the first week then I rearranged all of rock and the baby clown and hippo started showing spots. I did the freshwater dips and quarentine with meds and within a day or two they were both dead. Now since then I replaced the baby clown and again we were good for a couple days and then spots. So I took the advice of sostoud and a few others here at three reef and tried the garlic and vitamin method, along with keeping water good and not adding anymore stress to the fish by chasing them around and switching tanks and adding this and that. Within a little over a week spots were gone. I now wish I would have gotten this advise before I lost 100$ in fish.
