I have a 6 ft 120g tank that I'm currently refinishing with silicone, on top of the tank it had a glass in the middle that supports the split glass the seals the top, my question is does the tank need this piece for any sort of support on top or is it purely for the glass covers. I believe it looks alot better without it and was thinking of maybe just adding some sort of net on top

are you talking about a silicone sealed into position centre brace
that goes from the back of the tank to the front of the tank, in the middle?

    if so
    yes your tank needs this
if you remove a centre brace your tank could burst under the water pressure

It was held by silicone but just on the inside, and yes that was my reasoning that it could help retain water pressure but I would think it would hold someway by the outside

I would honestly not take the risk
with a smaller tank maybe but with the amount of water you have in that tank, and thus the amount of pressure that water will exert

it would be an awful way to find out it does not work should the seams burst in the future
