I have been looking into building a 40 breeder FOWLR and fuge upgrade over break and was wondering if this looks good. I plan on drilling it and having a high overflow box in the back center with a beananimal setup. I planned on using 3/4" bulkheads for all 3, is that about right? How wide would I have to make my overflow? Would a less wide one be louder?

Also, has anyone tried or heard of ebay diamond drill bits being used? You can get 3 for $10 shipped from hong kong. Even if they only last 1 hole each that would be enough.

I have not tried these diamond bits but you can get them from BRS for $5 or $6 a piece and they'll work for 3 or 4 holes. I would recommend these!!

Wider is quieter from a splash standpoint since the water will be more likely to go over the walls in a thin sheet instead of a thick blanket.

I didn't know they were normally so cheap. When I looked on amazon for one that would cut a hole for 3/4" pvc pipe it was $35 with shipping for one.

Also, I'm not sure how much flow I even need. It will definitely always be a FOWLR and I don't think I'd add many more fish. My fish are about 6" combined right now I was hoping on eventually getting a yellow clown goby and MAYBE a peaceful valentini puff about my green spotted's size. So that will sort of be helpful for knowing the bioload I hope. I'm guessing I need 15x the tank size per hour ish?

Ok thanks. I might just go along the entire wall to make it look uniform and since the small pipes will let the overflow be high enough where people probably won't be able to see (or at least notice) it while standing near it.

Bump. Anyone else have any thoughts? I've read on other places 8-10x flow rate is minimum, would any pump about 400 gph and up be about enough?

Also for the record, I might be upgrading my freshwater 37g to a 40b too and I could possibly use the 37 as a nice and big refugium.

There's two different types of diamond hole saws. The basic difference is that one is cheaply made and will only last for 3 or 4 holes, while the other is expensive and might last for 100 or more holes.
