A Golden Retreiver of mine recently passed away, and I'm thinking about getting a new companion for my Chocolate Labrador around Christmas time. I hear that German Shepherd/Collie mixes are great friends. The protectiveness and strength of the Shepherd, with the love and playfulness of a collie. before I decide, does anyone have any suggestions of what I should look into?

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Shepherd and cow dogs are the best IMO.

I would start hitting the local shelters.

    Do you mean "chow"? Hehe
Maybe. Thanks for the tip. This is going against my scruples, but a wolf/shepherd mix doesn't sound half bad either. Or an English Mastiff? More into latter dogs.

I dont know, the power of the shepard mixed with the craziness of a collie. sounds like a recipe for a disaster to me.

any local dog parks near by that you could check out?
i didnt realize how different a breeds personality can be til we took our dogs.
we have a husky and ridgeback.
husky is a bit of a loner dog but loves new people.
ridgeback is a beautiful dog, but ours is scared of bigger dogs (even tho shes pretty big and very solid :/) doesnt play fetch and loves to chew things tho. happy enough lazing on the couch while we watch tv tho.

I have a german shepherd/yellow lab mix. Best. Dog. Ever. She has the intelligence, power, protective instinct and coloring of a german shepherd, with the gentleness, kindness, affectionate nature, playfulness and desire to please of a lab. She's about 80 pounds, but seems much smaller. People think she's usually around 55-60.

She is so smart, sometimes it's a bit scary! She loves everybody and every dog or other animal she meets. We just got two kittens and she is so gentle with them. When strangers come to the door, she lets them know she is there to protect me. I love it!

    Here's my girl~!
