Quick story.......I set up a QT to quarantine a new tiny Caribbean Tang, within two weeks he developed ich and I treated for five weeks. It has been almost three weeks since the last spot disappeared.

The question now is am I doing more harm than good by keeping him in the QT and this is why I ask.

He has grown from about 3/4 inch to almost 2 1/2 inches and in a 29 gallon biocube, he has no where to go.

The second major issue is tank stability, despite the water changes and using Amquel Plus and a PH Buffer I cannot stop the drastic ammonia spikes and PH swings.

I obviously don't want to infect my DT and would love to keep him in quarantine for another 3-5 weeks but am I doing more harm than good?

I know this is the last thing you wanna hear... but maybe you need a bigger quarantine tank.

I just need a quarantine tank period lol. Good luck!

IMO Yes, I've never been a fan of QTs but I fully understand the need for them. Especially if your LFS have less than ideal conditions.
I would suggest if the ick is now gone get him into your display

That's what I am thinking , but people at other sites are telling me to stick it out another three weeks. But I just dont know, a 2 1/2 inch tang in a tank that's only 20" across, my 90 gallon is at least 48"

What to do, what to do ?

why is the ammonia spiking in the QT? Does it have live rock and was it cycled? anything else in there? I would wait another week or two, remember that tangs often get ich when stressed and moves stress them

True, but cant be any worse than the stress of a small, unstable tank.

Update:...........I moved the tang room the QT to the DT yesterday afternoon. Within minutes he was swimming around like he owned the place, with only a pair of clowns, flame angel, chromis and YWG he is the biggest fish in there so no one will mess with him. Without a doubt he looks stress free compared to being in the QT. Definitely think it was the right move.

again, why is the tank unstable? This is the concern to me. This could be fixed and having him in a 20 inch tank is better then contaminating (and possible loss) of your entire DT

Typically QTs would not be setup with live rock. As they need to have the adility to medicate. Daily water changes are often required

I cycled the QT for 6 weeks, thought it was good, after putting in the Tang the tank became unstable, I spent 10 weeks trying desperately for stability with no luck.
