I did a little experiment with phosphates just so Icould distiunguish between the color diffrence. At first I was only going to do ro and tank water but decided to throw in tap. I was angry at the results. The tap water was around 1.0/ppm although I expected to be a little higher. However my ro water was not far off my tap!! around .06/ppm. Ive been using this same water for months. My tank water still came in at 0 which im assuming my phosban reactor has been responsible for that.

Im no longer going to the grocery storefor water and im no longer buying any water without testing it first. Ive should have done this long ago so its my own fault. I recommend anyone to do the same. We have no idea how well are grocery store maintains there ro systems, how often they change out the filters or clean and maintain there source.

I almost feel like going to the store and demanding a refund for the money Ive spent in the last 6 months. If im buying ro water then I want ro water. Charging customers for water that is incorrectly filtered is stealing in my opinion. i mean..right?

I think you should go ahead and test for other parameters. IE. trates, trites, ammo, ph, dkh, and lets include the hard metals. The phos of the store water was almost a full point lower than your tap water. That is a huge difference.

The water at the grocery store is probably for drinking and just wouldn't taste right without a bit of phosphate.

Why not get your own rodi?

Hobbyist grade test kits are not designed to test for phosphates and other caontaminants in RO or ultrapure water, especially if you are using saltwater test kits in fresh water applications. I wouldn't be too concerned about it myself since it takes $100,000+ instruments to test down in the parts per million or billion range with any level of accuracy.

I was being sarcastic...but If ya want to go there I could get my money back. Just not reallyl to concerned with refund for $.29 a g used water.

I was under the assumption that RO water was phosphate free, not low phosphate. I assume this not the case. ?

The part Ive highlighted in red is a valid point. However I do believe these kits have some detections in freshwater otherwise there would be no color variance in the tap and the RO. I've also used this experiment with the RO at A usual LFS and there RO tests the same as my tank.

As far as the accuracy, te accuracy part may be right however although I may not no the correct numbers, I know in order from least phosphates to most. I have two brand kits and most tests tend to produce darker (greener) colors as phosphates go up.

So is RO water suppose to be phosphate free?

Friend of mine was using the grocery store water for years...always battling hair algae. I kept telling him to get a propper ro/di. I tested his tank water and came up with a trace amount of phosphates so out of curiousity I teted the ro from the store was absolutely off the charts. I used a seachem test kit for this. He said he tried sending letters to the company asking if the carbon they used was phosphate free and whether they were actually maintaining the system and never got a response.

Not to be callous, but why trust grocery store water in the first place?
