actually if you bid too high the first time people tend to keep trying to outbid you early on just so they have the higher bid, i have found that IMO you are more successful if you wait til the end to outbid because others are unaware of your intentions. I have to admit that after reading all this I recently, feel guilty to say, I have given in to the trend and joined justsnipe.com!! I won SEVERAL auctions recently and am now a proud repper!! haha if you cant beat them, join them is definitely how I feel!!

I just posted a lot of new auctions on eBay. Snipe away friends. Drive the price up. Whatever you want. My auctions are there for you :)

Let's keep the sniping thing on the down lo.
The fewer snipers out there the better.

Thats the reason I dont bother with ebay. The seller can easily ask a buddy to outbid until he gets the price he wants.Very faulty system over there:angry:

Until they get caught, or end up winning the item....

Sniping is part of any auction unfortunately. eBay just has a finite ending time, whereas traditional bidding is "bid until someone stops upping the price." Having buddies up the price for a seller is called shill bidding and is against policy and is fraud.

eBay benefits most when the final price is higher. Rest assured eBay has no qualms with folks sniping. The buyer gets what he/she wants for a price they're willing to pay, and the seller gets more money for the item. Of course, eBay gets more from the seller, too. People snipe in the hopes that the'll win the item. IMO it's perfectly fair. If I snipe and outbid Timmy, I won only because I outbid Timmy. Does the timeliness of the bid matter?

If the current price is $15, I'm the higest bidder and my max bid is $25, then chances are I'm not going to get sniped. If I lose it in the final seconds, it's because someone was willing to pay more than me. All's fair either way.

As for asking a buddy to bid it up, if your buddy wins it--then you've lost the opportunity to sell the item, and you're out the fees for the auction.

It's not a perfect system, but IMO it works. I know the OP is a bit miffed that he lost the auction in the final seconds, but sometimes that's the way it is.
