Read this carefully. I'm NOT doing this with my Display tank.

I want to shoot calcium levels up from 300ppm to 400ppm all at once. I have 50Gallons of saltwater in a drum. I do 50gallon waterchanges. I want to boost the magnesium and calcium in this water and make sure that everything is stable before i do a water change. I do NOT want to dose my tank directly. My question is this. What are the dangers of bring the calcium level up quickly (in one go)?????

Anything done fast is never really a good practice IMO. I would probably raise it gradually over a few days.

I really don't see a problem. Toss a power head in your drum and let it mix for a bit just like you do when you mix in a bag of salt water. You are only looking at adding about 5 tablespoons of calcium chloride.

Speaking of which, what is your salinity? Curious as to why your calcium is so low to begin with.

You'll want to stabilize your mag at the proper level first. Otherwise, cal and alk may just keep precipitating each other back out of solution.

+1 Without the proper level of Mag. you might as well chase your tail.:)
Why is there a rush to raise it??

Do not raise your Mg more than 100ppm per day and your Ca 50ppm per day or you will risk losing your corals. If you have no corals then as long as you do not raise your salinity too much it will be OK.

He's not adding it to his tank. It's in his salt water mixing drum.

He still needs to add Ca and Mg slowly to the change water or it will precipitate out.

I do this every time I do a water change. Simply add what the chart requires.
there is no issue with this.

    Right.

I am still curious as to why it's so low. I'd like to know where the salinity is.
