He may be adding at the rate listed on the salt container. It usually seems to mix at 1.021SG or so from the package directions.

I live in jamaica. I use natural seawater all the time. all my corals do GREAT. nothing ever dies other than orange ricordia floridia. Which i'm not sure why I can't keep. The natural seawater calcium and magnesium is very low. I think thats partly why our reefs aren't doing that well.

I want to do it quickly because i can't be bothered to add cal and mag over a period of days when nothing is actually in the water.

yea I'll DEFINATELY do this. I'll raise mag first then check calcium and raise that all at once. I'll leave a pump on the drum for a couple days then test all params. Then I'll do my water change. Thanks for the help.

I don't know why i didn't think of this before. It seems obvious that i should dose the water but dose the water change. Why would we ever take a chance dosing the tank itself?

I don't think that's very likely. It's most likely the corals are suffering from either warming ocean temperature, acidification, disease or a combination of the 3.

I am not sure why your calcium levels are reading so low, however. What are you using to test?

we are talking about 2.4oz of Dow Flake or 69.4 grams.
Adding that all at once is not going to be an issue

With a low Magnesium level you run a real risk of precipitation IME. I would raise that first.

What do you think is is not likely? My corals aren't suffering, they are thriving. I do have issues with a couple of coral species but they are far and few between. I am using Salifert test kits for calcium and magnesium.

I use a refractometer. Remember I'm using natural seawater ONLY no mix. My salinity is 1.030.
