They are expensive and use a lot of electricity.

Mostly thats it...what the others said....power to run it, the cost of the chiller, also the setup depending on the chiller.

Sometimes they are loud too and give off some heat!

Get a couple fans, they're easier to setup and cheaper!

I always put chillers on my tanks. It helps keep the temperature constant (no swings day-night). Fans work well for some smaller tanks, but only go so far.

I typically plumb them to another area.

one other potential downside to chillers is the noise factor

if they are in the living room or worse in a tank in a bedroom, they can be an irritation
most of the other things we have on our set ups are either less noisy and/or constant
anything thats constant can gradually fade into the background and not be noticed (ticking clock analogy)

but chillers come on according to temp and the start up noise could be a problem in situations as described above

I have a 135 gallon tank with one fan on the DT and one fan on the sump. They are controlled by my Apex and come on if the temp hits 80.5 and go off when the temp is 79.5. The Apex will also shut off my MH lights for 30 minutes if my temp ever goes over 82. I have not had any problems with this setup and I keep my house at around 72.

My temp never goes above 80.1 and never goes below 79.5

I have a fan on my tank. it turns on as soon as my lights go on. My temp stays at exactly 78F. Once I turn my fan off the temp sky rockets to 80 in only a few minutes. Fans really do make a huge difference.
