So I had to shut down my last tank after I failed to rinse GFO properly resulting in completely opaque bown water.
This time with my new set up, I was thorough at washing out the GFO before I put it in the reactor. despite trying my best to rinse the GFO till the water ran clear, it still had dust and now my tank is slightly tinted brown and cloudy.
I've been washing out filter media for the past 4 days with little results.
I added a skimmer last night and currently wet skimming and that seems to be working alright.
Anything else I can do the resolve this issue?
    Thanks

Some power heads to keep it suspended and filter socks to catch it. Skimmer will help a lot over time

When I ran GAC or GFO, I would run it through a sock.

have you been running carbon? you will need something to catch it - as mentioned a sock? or something similar

oh man, I feel your pain. I've done the same thing... I used filter socks, carbon and aggressive skimming after I drained the sump and wet-vac'd everything out of the sump. It took a few days to a week, but it cleared up.

My issue was not rinsing well enough and running too much flow thru the GFO reactor.

How much flow were you running your GFO?

I am not a big fan of GFO for that reason. I used to have the reactor dump into filter floss suspending in a fishnet to help with this. Some floss in a filter sock would help too.

This is a good idea. I don't think I run GFO without a filter sock anymore. I really should put something on the output of the reactor and just beat it to the punch.

Thanks for the replies. I came home this evening to see that it's 60% cleared up. The added filter floss and rediculous wet skimming seems to have helped.
The floss in the sock is a great idea.
I had the output of the reactor go into a sock but it still got out. I think it may be because the sock is a few years old. I will have to get new socks for the future.
I'm a bit too lazy to wash out the sock and floss tonight but I will do it in the morning and hopefully see some increased results by nightfall.

No carbon as yet. I will have to get some new socks becuase it seems as though it has been getting through my old one.

    I think I can help reslove this issue as you ask, but you probably won't like my opinion;
Stop running the GFO- there are alternatives, and natural ones at that.
Perhaps if you got rid of the 'filter media', (unless only since the GFO), you might not need the GFO.
And I hope you always had a skimmer, right?
