    Here goes,

I have a 55gal I plan on drilling and connecting to a 30gal sump below it. My question is can I partition the back corners off and drill the a hole on each side on the bottom?

This would remove the need for an over flow as long as the glass doesn't shatter etc.

Great typo, that about made my day. But seriously in a 55 you're probably only going to need to drill 1 corner instead of both. I second the above recommendation for the glass cages kit. Their setups dont take up any valuable floorspace and look great when installed.

I didn't think you could drill the bottom of a tank with it being tempered glass...?

I think you can if you're SUPER careful. I guess i could just do it on the sides, but I had an overflow box once and it was nothing more than a pain. The sump's sole purpose will be to house a skimmer because i have hang on right now and I can't stand looking at it.

The site is actually called glass-holes.com :p

The bottom of most tanks are tempered glass, and if you try to drill it very bad things will happen.

You could get a couple of overflow boxes from that same site, and instead of blocking off the back corners, just drill the back of the tank and set the overflows as far to each side as is safe.

There are some calculations I saw ReefGuru post in another thread that will tell you the minimum safe distance from any edge that you can drill the holes.

    Hope that helps!
