i have a tank i am wanting to drill but some sides are made from 2 layers of glass put together and the backing has a mirro finish on the inside, does the duel layering of mirror finish make a difference? also how can you tell if the tank walls are tempered?? thanks

as far as i know that tempered is going to make it kinda of difficult, you really have to have a good diamond head drill bit to get the job done. I have to admit though that ive only done alot of research i havnt done this on my own yet.

Apparently if you use a blacklight you can tell if a tank is tempered. I don't exactly know how to tell, as I know what is tempered and what is not on your standard tanks.

If it is tempered, don't attempt to drill it. it will break.

2 layers of glass?? I don't think I would attempt to drill that.

Sounds like it may be tempered to me. You will find out for sure though if you attempt to drill it. It will shatter into a million tiny pieces.

Wear a pair of polarized sunglasses and look at the tank in the light. You'll see a pattern if it's tempered. Take a look at your car window with the sunglasses on and you'll see what I mean. Tempered glass cannot be drilled.

    agreed.

My glass cutter also showed me another method. Look down the face of the glass (the viewing area) lengthwise against a light. When glass is tempered, you can see a ripple in the glass. Glass that is not tempered will look perfectly smooth.

Well what about the mirror back tanks? My Marineland 28g bow front is just dying to get drilled, but i'm afraid to break the mirror/glass on the back.

Back glass should not be tempered. But best bet is to call/e-mail the tank manufacturer and ask them.

As kookie guys states, the back glass should not be tempered, mirrored or not. But I would call marineland to make sure.
