    I was just curious how to figure out how many GPH the overflow can handle.. I am sure in my 55g I would not have to worry about having too strong of a return pump..

    I just made an overflow from 3/4" PVC. Max flow rate is a bit more than 300 gph. I have to close the valve on the overflow pipe because my Mag 5 doesn't provide enough flow from the sump.

    I also am running a phosban reactor in series with my return. You can always use the extra return capacity for other purposes like this.

    With my 50 gallon, I ran 2 one inch overflows and it handled a mag 5 just fine.
