It was a moonless night, dark and quiet. The ocean was calm, under her surface the inhabitants were at peace. Fish sleeping in rocky outcroppings and feeder tentacles were gently swaying.

    No one heard it coming...

A big margarita snail, the size of an apricot, came careening around the corner. Riding the glass, it was skimming over the sand bed at a breakneck speed (for a snail).
He had a hollow look in his eyes, but maybe there was something there; determination, disregard, or perhaps drunkenness I will never know which.

I would like to think he didn't see the Fungia but everyone knows that's my favorite. Barreling by, the snail clipped the edge of the plate (P.I.T. maneuver?). He kept going.

Now the plate has about 0.5 inches skeleton exposed vertically, spanning the width of two ridges. The culprit was identified but the laws of the ocean are that there are no laws.
Nothing can be done, no punishment rendered nor restitution sought.

    ______

I have fed the Plate and brought up my iodine levels. Parameters are all great. Anything else I can do here?

What's the communities experience with nicked plate corals?

    I loved your story.

Keep it fed and keep the water healthy. It probably didn't need any Iodine but it's not likely to hurt it either.

It will regrow. Nothing to worry about.

I too never had anything like this happen, but I can imagine the horror and carnage. Great presentation. I wish I could come up with clever ways of presenting issues like that.

    Thank-you all for the Karma!

The plate seems to be doing fine and it expanding/contracting as well as eating very good. Its sore hasn't started to close up yet but I bet it will soon.

I have one other story but it got a mixed reception.

Have a read: http://www.3reef.com/forums/inverts/bad-father-71075.html#post684318 It's more of an account than a story though.

BTW, this one is doing fine now, and we are on good terms again.
