i have had my dsb going now for about 5 months, it did have 2" and i added more out of my other tank when it started leaking--needed to put it somewhere so i made a 7" dsb ;D. so the tank its self has been running for over a year. i use to have a diamond watchman goby but he jumped out on me during the sand adding day/night he got super spoked after he didnr have a home and i of course was rearanging the tank for 2-3days on and off so he jumped out and was crusty by morning. :( anyway i alwasy thought the dsb should not me distribed so that the oxygen cant get to the lower levels of the bed. but on the other had i have nassiri snails in there, brittle worms and a crazy clown fish that uses the sand bed for hosting. so the bed is always getting turned/disturbed on the top 2 inchs anyway.
last time i was in my lfs the manager said that i should get a goby again to help stir yp the sand to help relese the nitrogen that forms do to the dsb working. so it did get me thinking about the snails and thats what there doing, so why not 1 goby in there, last one i had would make 1 hole and just use that one of course he was alway trying to make it bigger but sand has a way of going to the lowest point in his hole so its was a never ending battle for the goby.
what do you all think, would 1 diamond watchman goby destroy the dsb on me in a 55G ? thanks for the input

Destroy it, probably not. IT will sift through the top layer for food and what not. But it should be okay.

I would think you would be alright. Like you said, snails will bury themselves in the SB anyways. The top layer is most likely already being disturbed.

It most likely will consume all of the fauna in the sand bed rendering it useless as a DSB. The other critters are OK though.

The goby is a predator to the DSB infauna.

after a little research online i see fauna is a collection of like things in one place for a perioed of time-- so when you say the watchman will eat the fauna your really trying to say it will eat several different kinds of detivors that i cant see (smaller than copepods). so would rotifers be considered a type of detervior fauna ive never added them on purpose to my tank. dont have corals, just a couple of mushrooms. i read this article it was very helpful The Infamous Detritivore by Ronald L. Shimek, Ph.D. - Reefkeeping.com

another question for you, when i add my top off water (not saltwater) i usally put it in my refugium pouring slowly (gallon= 15sec) so the colder water -room temp 68-70 doesnt freak out one of the fish/inverts i have in the tank and possible shock them to death. leaned my lesson from my clown who knocked himself out once by swimming right into the fresh water. Dont know if it was the salinity diff or the temp diff right where the water was going in but he crash landed on the sand bed for about 15-20 seconds. so thats the reason why i put it in the fuge, but thinking now if it can/will kill a invert wont it kill all the copeopds/detivor fauna thats in there? the very thing im tryingto keep alive. pehaps i should pour new water into the overflow so i can mix some!
