I`m setting up a 75g refugium that will link into my sump. I want to take this chance to set up a mini DSB. I`ve heard of people putting some sand in a piece of tupperware to get a small portion of this type of filtration within the aquarium.

I want most of my refugium to contain very little substrate so that I can keep detritus traps away.

My current setup is 135g display, 90g sump (with my fuge taking up about 30g) and then with the 75g refuge I would have roughly 250g of water. How big could I make my DSB and not have to cover the whole thing?

Soooo where do you want the DSB? In the new 75? Are you asking what size section of the 75 to set up for a DSB???

Yeah I want it in the 75g; but don`t want the complete base covered by a DSB. What size could I minimally get away with?

The smaller it is the less efficiently it will work. Personally i'd use more than a tupperware but you should make it as large as you can live with.

I dont think you are going to have a lot of detritus once it hits the seperate 75 gallon fuge. If you have filter socks and a skimmer in the sump, there will be very little to make it to the 75. You could just silicone a 6 inch baffle in a section and fill it with a 5 inch DSB.
