I have a 28 gallon bowfront that is running 2 Koralia 550s. I recently added a controller, and have set the pumps up to randomly alternate (and also run together at times).

Since this changes my total flow per hour, would I need to look into adding powerheads?

lol, maybe??? what are ya keeping in the tank? If ya have corals, they'll let ya know, but more flow is usually always better, I'd maybe consider upgrading to 2 750 evos or adding another 550. But depending on what ya have, ya could very well be fine.

I'd be surprised of you needed MORE than to 550's in a 28 gal...

Being in a 28 bf,i'd think you'll be fine.I'm sure you have a filter of some type and a skimmer? They will also contribute to overall turnover. But I do agree, your corals will let you know if more flow is needed, but personally,i'd like the randomness of the flow like that and thinking of setting up my wavemaker (collecting dust) to do about the same thing.

Ok, coral is growing well, and seems much happier in the random flow. I had a lot of factors that contributed to a cyno outbreak that I have been battling. Thought I had it won, and now some of it is coming back. Just wanted to be sure going from 2 550 running constantly down to them alternating didn't have anything to do with it. And trust me there were plenty of other things that could have caused it. I just want to be sure I eliminate all the decently likely possibilities to keep my tank as healthy as possible :)

Also, ya I have a remora skimmer as well as a HOB fuge that affect flow some I suppose. Also adding a BRS reactor when it shows up today.

just watch for detritus build up in anny dead spots .if its cleen you shouldent need anny more flow unless your corals need it to feed properly.the point of a wave maker is to change the flow and remove dead spots while saving energy by not running the power heads all the time. i hope this helps and good luck.

Between the new led's and the wave maker, my corals are def growing a lot faster. I do think the wave maker is a lot of it though.

I would say thats plenty of flow for that sized tank, plus your already adding more flow yet when your reactor comes online.Your cyano problem could be a nutrient issue, which i would give your reactor a chance to see how it does.
