I'm building an overflow for my new 17g nano, and planned on running a durso standpipe in it. The tank was originally used as a sump, and the hole drilled in the side fits a 1" bulkhead. I had no problem using a 1" standpipe in the overflow box, but as I was reading Make Your Own Durso Standpipe you actually need to use a larger diameter standpipe than the bulkhead. How many of you use a larger diameter standpipe, and what have been the results?

How would you do that exactly? Stick a bit of 1" pipe in the bulkhead and upsize from there?
I used 1" on mine (not exactly a by-the-book durso though). It does gurgle a bit.

Edit - this is on my 75 show turtle tank.

Yes, if you have a 1" bulkhead in the side, then from there put a 1" to 1.25" elbow, then use the 1.25" fittings from there.

A guy on my local forums did pretty much what you are describing. I will see if I can get pic.

1" is pretty huge, you might want to downsize the pvc with a reducing bushing or 2, and then upsize from that. get the drift? I can explain it a little better and maybe get a link for you if you want. Durso overflow's website has instructions.

If you don't upsize from the bulkhead size, it will gurgle and or simply make more noise than it would if you upsized one size.

Actually, I would go with a hofer gurgle buster or other one as it won't take as much real estate up as a durso with a weir.

The idea behind having a larger standpipe than bulkhead is that you'll generate more water pressure in the pipe which will help water flow out of the tank faster. We've tried it both ways and there wasn't much of a difference. We're currently using 1" homemade durso pipes with a 1" bulkhead and everything is working fine. We built ours the same way as the one in the picture above (except we used a regular bulkhead instead of the electrical fittings), but we drilled a small hole in the top cap for air to go through... that eliminated all gurgling for us.
