I have my fry in a four litre wide mouth jar with an open airline for circulation and artificial hitches. I have some small pieces of rock but only one was live when I started it a couple of months ago. I used new aged salt water the same s.g. and pH that the dwarf tank is. I have no "filters" as such on any of my tanks.

Okay - I'm really from the freshwater world where I will overkill filtration by at least twice the recommended gallon size, and same with my dwarf tank, it has 2 filters (the one that comes with the Fluval Edge) and a sponge filter, as well as probably 2 or 3 pounds of live rock for 6 gallons of water.

And I'm curious as to why you don't use filters - do they not work well with liverock or was the liverock simply sufficient filtration on its own?

I'd like to modify my setup little by little to provide them the best environment, and if I'm doing this wrong or inefficiently, I'd like to change it :)

Also - just a little update

The third one that got lost? That's him.. or her... :) I returned the babies back to the main tank and removed all of the crabs, since this one was obviously getting more to eat than the ones I was trying to target feed. (The breeder box is pretty awkward in the Fluval)

I'd like to see how they do as they are since I don't have a fry rearing tank devoted to them yet - and I'm not confident in providing them a special tank with the same parameters as the display tank and keeping those parameters very long. But I would like to learn how to do it and try to see if I can keep the 1.5 gallon stable (it crashed the first time I set it up)

I've never used filters for anything other than water movers.
I've use my aquaclears on the back of my 40g seahorse tanks back when I had no sumps, but I had no filters in them.
Live rock is all I need for the biological filtration, and I consider mechanical filtration to be detrimental in that it often removes plankton from the water column that I want the corals and some fish to feed on.
I've not encountered a need for anything more so far in 18 years.

I was going to say that a breeder net would work but I forgot about the size of your tank. Maybe you can rig something up using the netting/frame of a fish net?

In my dwarf setups, I have successfully raised the fry with the adults and no other tank-mates except for snails. The type of filters I used varied from time to time but I remember really liking the ease of use of air driven sponge filters. I set the air pump/hose up to a valve and was able to increase water flow into the sponge very easily and as needed. All other types of filters I used, had to be fitted with either an intake sponge or some sort of live rock blockade.

I don't mean to offend but may I ask why you have a FIre Fish in a 7g tank?
I do love how much care you've put into your set up. Awesome job!!

Best thing you could do is to register at seahorse.org and once accepted you can post questions on the Dwarf forum.
In the meantime, it's best to read the existing posts on that forum so that you can ask more direct questions to any not answered just by reading.
You should also start to hatch brine shrimp to see if you can tolerate the regular ritual of doing this because the dwarfs need live enriched bbs.
