Am going to do some depopulating in my tank...couple of damsels (blue devil) and couple of Dysilus (Humbug) to make room for pair of Flame wrasses due to arrive this weekend.

Was looking for fish trap and came accross this ....

    Building Your Own Fish Trap

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the most frustrating problems you will ever face as a planted tank enthusiast is having to capture fish in a heavily planted aquarium! Nets simply fail at the task and in the process, stress all the aquarium inhabitants while damaging or uprooting plants. One of the easiest solutions we have employed for years is to simply drain the aquarium. This reduces the area fish may hide and or escape though may not be as desirable in all cases. Besides, it still takes lots of time.

Here is way to build one:

    Materials:
    1. 2-L Soda Bottle.
    2. Scissors
    3. Hole puncher
    4. A few twist ties.

Cut the bottle in half 1/3 down from the top. Invert the smaller top 1/3 and insert it into the bottom 2/3 section. Punch at least three holes around the rim through both bottle sections. You use the twist-ties to hold each of these bottle sections in place. Add food to the trap and submerge it into the aquarium.

The trap works on the same principle as all fish traps; its shape has a wide opening that funnels the fish in but a very small opening that restricts their exit. The trap works amazingly quickly. Within a few minutes, a couple fish get trapped. Within a few more minutes, it seems the trap just fills up with all the fish in the aquarium as the ones outside the trap fight to find the way in. They just can't stand to be outside a feeding frenzy!

If your goal is to trap one particular fish (and if the aquarium is well stocked), then you will probably have to reset the trap a couple times till you nab the one you want. Also note, the trap will tend to float so you will need to add a weight to the trap to encourage the trapping of bottom feeders. In addition, to empty the trap you will have to undo the twist-ties each time, dump the contents and redo the twist-ties.

    Have fun...

I've used that trap with success in the past. Be prepared to catch a lot of things that you DON'T want though :)

I used that kind of trap to catch a damsel, and the damsel swam in, ate the food, went to put the bottle out, and the damsel swam right back out.
