I noticed over the past week or so that 3 out of my 12 astrea snails have died (just stopped moving for several days). My fish and hermit crabs are ok, and water parameters are fine (ammonia and nitrites 0, nitrates 5, pH 8.2, temp 80 F, salinity 1.025). What could be causing the snails to die?

I know they don't last real long but any stray current that may be in tank, do you have a ground probe? My crabs were eating my snails, I've had to banish the blue legs to the sump.

I don't think it is electrical current, since I do use a ground probe. And I don't think it's my blue leg hermits - I have plenty of shells for them, and they don't seem to be co-opting the shells of the dead snails. No, the snails just seem to be dying slowly....I wish I knew what to do about it.

I'm not sure what to tell you except I had the same thing happen to me. Over 3 weeks I lost around 25 astrea snails slowly maybe one a day without hermits attacking them. Just got sick I guess. I don't put anything in the tank that can't flip itself over now either. Water parameters were near pristine the entire duration also. Grounding probe as well.

Not a fan of the astrea snails.
