I recently switched from a Hamilton m59 ballast, to a 400 watt Hamilton e-ballast. looking for a nice 20k bulb, with decent PAR to run. I read so many conflicting opinions on which bulbs run well on e-ballasts. I read that the 400 watt radiums are only really rated at 360 watts. I also read that e-ballasts under drive the radium bulbs. So what is a good quality bulb to run on this ballast. Won't the under driving of the radium kinda balance out with the actual 360 watt rating of the 400 watt bulb. When I switched to the e-ballast it was apparent that the bulbs i have now (Hamilton 400 watt 20k's) burn much brighter on the e-ballast vs. the m59? So I would think that the statement of e-ballast under drving bulbs is not true...any info to clear this up woukld be great!!:-/

E ballasts don't overdrive the bulbs... But they do drive the bulbs much mor efficiently.
Here's an example I just made up: an M59 might pull 400w but only put out like 375w to a bulb. An e ballast will pull 400w and put out like 395w to the bulb.

That is why it looks brighter. To answer your original question, you can run radiums on e ballasts perfectly fine. They will put more watts to the bulb so it will emit a slightly different spectrum (but this difference is barely noticeable).
