I agree with this. I've always found they do great for a while, but can be very prone to RTN and die off suddenly with no warning.

thanks guys, i am not planning on keeping many if any soft corals or polyps. steve, if i have heavy flow will sediment still get caught in the birdsnest branches? and 2in10 does the same thing happen with a stylopora? im correct its your avatar?

    1+ to stylos
I'd start with some M. digitata, and once you feel confident with that maybe a pink Milli. I'd usually recommend a green slimer acro but in such a small tank with no skimmer or powerful filter I don't think the mucus would do anything good.

My birdnest gets crap caught in it all the time, and the branches are pretty delicate. Plus I have the ORA green and if it touches any other living thing it starts to bleach. Stylos have thick branches and don't get GHA caught in them as much.

Your tank will have no room, and the SPS and LPS will have an all out war, putting out toxins which in such a small system could be very bad. Try chalices or acans. Stay away from Euphyllids and things with long sweeper tentacles such as brains.

if you are serious about SPS in a 5 gallon set up then the number of soft corals you want in there is 0 IMHO
    you have chemical warfare
you have an issue in that in a 5 gallon you will find it extremely difficult to have enough flow for SPS corals if you have softies in there

heavy flow - but random flow, so that water movement goes around the coral from several directions , that way nothing gets pushed against the branches and stays there long, before water from another direction pushes it away

when you start seeing coraline growing on your rockwork
then your ready for SPS IME (thanks Annick)
but water quality is very important
Mag, Cal and Alk ( reef parameters maintained and stable)
Nitrates and phosphates - undetectable on hobbyist test kits
