A simple 2x4 frame will be more than enough for that size tank, then choose the exterior wood that you like best ;D

Exactly. I might even go with a plywood stand or other more space friendly wood than 2x4's. when I made a 2x4 stand for my 35g, the legs took up quite a bit of room underneath and seriously gave me issues with room for sumps and stuff.

When I built my stand for my 200g, I went with 2x4 and 2x6 construction, but that is partially becasue it is a plywood tank and it needs the stand to support more than just the edge like a glass tank needs. That tank is also over 5 feet long and 30" wide, so space was not an issue.

i made my 55 stand with4x4 and 2x4....seriously overbuilt. it weighs a ton(well...more lke 150lbs) and should be able to support a ton aswell. in hindsight, 2x4 and ply-wood would have been way easier, cheaper and lighter. DO IT!

For a 55g, you could make one out of thinner plywood easily. Anyone that has seen Aqueon's stands will see that we overbuild our stands by a huge margin.

I've seen some awesome plywood stand builds recently. And the tanks that go on these plywood only stands are up to 125g.
