I'd like to know about and easy and affordable sump/set up. I have a 46 Gal. tank, I don't have corals, I only have one fish, since my tank's still clycling...anyway, I have never used a sump and I'm completly and utterly clueless about them. Is there a simple sump I could get as a beginner? do I need extra plumbing/pumps? Do I need to get rid of my power filter? I appreciate your help guys. Laters.

I was thinking about setting one up for my 55 gal using a rubber made container. Anyone wanna give this a go....some very simple explanation of what you need and the basics of setting it up would be good too.....

a sump can be as simple as some plant life and a pump to take the water back up to the tank.maybe put a heater and a skimmer in there if you want.you don't even need a tank.you could use anything capable of holding water.you need to make sure you have something deviding the sump so the plants do not get sucked up in the pump.

I have recently set up a custom sump and recommend careful planning. Even as far as making a drawing or schematic. Making a list of fittings etc. The more you plan it out the less annoying trips you'll make to your local hardware store. Also a methodical building process. There are a couple of web sights that will provide instructions. YOU TUBE has some pretty informative videos if you look around enough. CPR AQUATICS offers a pretty nice and highly recommended sump complete with protein skimmer included. All you need after that is the plumbing, overflow, and pump for the most part.

If I'm thinking of upgrading my 55 gal. to a 90 gal., can I use the 55 gal. as my sump/refugium? Right now I have a 15 gal. tank that is my refugium. I have no sump.

sure you could! would be a good idea. I've also thought of that when I upgrade to a bigger tank. do seperators in it for sump/fuge...

As mention I have a 15 gal refug on the 55gal and has a light on it 24/7. Would/Could that still be the case? It has mud in it.
I would just have to get dividers - how do you attach them and can they be made of plexaglass?

I only have a 12 gal nano dx. I have a 12 gallon sump, mostly for cooling purposes. I have about 3 snails, and 3 crabs. A tupperware container with live sand and calerpa in it . My sump houses my protien skimmer, return pump of course and a power head for circulation. I use a rubber maid container. I had to keep my sump small because it is my stand behind closed doors so my 2 year old doesn't decide to give anything a bath......
