i came across this website. Has anyone seen or used this piece instead of a protein skimmer? It says that there are a couple of aquariums that use it.
let me know what you think

sounds like a gimmick to me... These is no real information telling you how it works or how it is removing wastes...it just tells you it increases oxidation reduction potential with a vague description of the inner workings. Then they give examples of how it compares to a protien skimmer as far as ease of maintenance and the general cons of skimmers in comparison...Well most of those things listed hold no validity which just further implies that it is just a gimmick.
    For example,
1)My protein skimmer doesnt require weekly adjustments, Once i adjust it it stays dialed in until i decide i want to adjust it for reasons of my own...(like producing more wet or dry skimmate)
2)My waste cup has never once overflowed because when i adjust my skimmer is stays where i want it!
3)clogging venturi valves...You clean your car when it is dirty...so clean the venturi when it is dirty!
4)Venturi sucking noise is virtually elimated if your skimmer is in your sump and the door is closed on your cabinet.
    5) salt creep...again when your tank or equipment are dirty....clean it! pretty simple
    6) excessive bubbles and splashing...easily solved if you plumb the drain correctly on your skimmer.
    7) monthly electricity cost... well that depends on the pump that you use for the skimmer...keep in mind you use a pump to drive the ecoaqualizer as well.
    8) ongoing replacement costs??? uhhh i have yet to replace any part on my skimmer other than a impellor for the pump...but again this unit also uses a pump to drive it so wouldnt that be the same ongoing cost?

Now i havent seen this unit in person nor do i know anyone using it...but id want a lot more information before id say that it is a replacemnt for a skimmer. In my mind the second most important part of a SW tank is the skimmer. Only falling second to water itself!

i wanna be clear that i am not saying that it cant be a useful addition to your filtration skid but i just dont see it as a replacement to a skimmer!

I'll make you the same offer /Bet I made a LFS guy back in Va several yrs ago Get one take it apart and if its anything worth 3.00 in there I'll buy the case from you at full retail and forfeit the 100.00 bet. Its simply some refrigerator magnets and black vinyl elect. tape all wrapped around the outside of a section of 1" PVC with barbed adapters on it and a cellophane shrink wrap label . They where about out of the business until a big aquarium expert took control of the company LOL and their is a real story how control was take over LOL Unless someone can explaine to me what effect magnets would have on water other then attracting some iron I'm not going to buy another one .

They are as good as any other snake oil product out there. Save your money for something that really works.

Good reviews does not mean a good product.

The science behind the product is bad, it can not do what is claimed.

If you have a product you would like a good review of, just let me know and I can write you one.

i did read/skim through them and i still find it to be a very bold statement to say it will replace the need for a skimmer in a reef aquarium. The information provided about how the thing actually works is pretty vague and there is very small group of people using these things to draw any conclusive results as to the efficiency of the product as well as the long term reliability of the unit. Where on the opposite side of the spectrum...Protein skimmers have stood up to the test of time in comparison to these units.

Now again I dont have a real clear understanding of the inner workings of this item nor do they really provide much technical data that is clear and concise. So as i said in my second post on the subject...
So if you wanna test it out by using one of these in replacement of your skimmer and post your test results that would be great. However i wont be the guinea pig :) It would be a more feasable claim to say it can be used to replace a UV CLARIFIER (not sterilizer)...because to me the product reviews that people have made have seemed to more so mimic the results one would achieve with the use of an UV clarifier more so than that of what a protien skimmer does.
