Hey guys, it's only been 2 months since the start of this Saltwater Reef EcoPico Build, but, we've gone a long way! We're nearing the completion of livestock in the tank!

So far, all the guys in the tank are looking pretty healthy, but it's only been two months, so I hope they're going to keep strong, fingers crossed!

So I was thinking...how cool would it be to see my hermit crabs in glass shells? I went online to check if they were selling any! They DIDN'T. :(
They only have one for those large land hermit crabs. I think if someone had made a bunch of little glass or clear plastic shells for the saltwater hermit crabs (that they would actually crawl into), they can make quite a few bucks from the saltwater community! lol.

    Check out these guys:

I want this one but smaller for the hermit crabs in water!:

    Glass Shell Update:

Hey guys, so guess what? Apparently they DO sell glass shells for your hermit crabs! Fellow 3Reefer, TJSlayer, showed me this website:

    http://www.glassshell.com/

It's slightly pricey, but I'll get one to see if they work! If they do, you'll be seeing little glassed hermit crabs in my EcoPico!

$13.50 for clear hand blown glass hermit crab shells! I'll see if I negotiate with the artist to get a cheaper deal. (Maybe do a group buy for 3reefers for those who are interested)

    :)

Hey Haloist, I'm loving the tank!

I'm looking to get an EcoPico for my girlfriend and I wanted to ask you hows the tank holding up with all the livestock corals and fish? Are you just using the filter that came with the tank and thats it? Do you have a skimmer attached? Is there any water quality issues or any algae issues?

    Thank You!

Hey 1.0reef, thanks, yeah, I have updates, I'll post them up soon! :)

Hey EasyMac, awesome questions! My tank has been running strong for about 3 months now. All my livestock are doing really well thus far. I'm hoping it'll continue to be healthy.

Water quality issues and algae issues typically stem from the owner's reef-taking habits and decisions. But, the EcoPico's lighting design doesn't promote algae growth, if that's what you were asking!

For filters, I'm just using the stock filter and a modded internal filter by Marina (all I did was take out the filter pad and stuck in Chaeto). Chaeto is a type of macroalgae that helps control unwanted algae by acting as a competitor, sucking up all the nutrients needed for other algae growths.
For ALL tanks these size, the BEST type of filter is manual water changes. 25-30% weekly or biweekly partial water changes is ideal and will help with any water issues. It is also highly recommended to have live rock and live sand for natural filtration. The key is actually just doing weekly or biweekly water changes.

The EcoPico Reef is amazing in several aspects:
    - the LED lights are amazingly bright and will support most types of corals.
    - the Design allows for extremely easy cleaning
    - simple and elegant
    - the LED lights make the water shimmer. It's really really pretty. Definitely an eye-catcher for any passerby.
    - the stock filter's pump is perfect for the EcoPico's size (no need to buy a pump for the tank)
    - The EcoPico's simple design makes it easy to decorate
    - Extremely energy efficient (saves you money on your electric bill)
    - LED lighting does not heat up tank
    - Comes with a nice lid (unlike most other tanks that come without lids)
    - Lots of room for creativity

    Recommended? Definitely!

In fact, I'm probably buying another one soon for my cousin who keeps on begging me to buy him one after seeing mine!

Here's the site for the EcoPico Reef:
Ecopico Reef Desktop Aquarium - Eco Pico Reef Tank

Good luck with tank hunting, let me know which one you decide to get! :D
