    Press release from EcoTech today...

In our quest to continually raise the bar for product excellence and customer experience, EcoTech Marine is delighted to announce the release of the all new EcoTech Marine Battery Backup. Thanks to our loyal and rapidly expanding customer base, EcoTech Marine continues to grow. Expanding our product line and in-sourcing our production and quality control is a natural step for us to take, and one we hope is embraced by the reefing community.

After an extensive period of engineering, the new EcoTech Marine Battery Backup is now shipping. "By bringing the Battery Backup accessory in-house, we can now better control the availability and final quality of this critical piece of reef tank insurance," said Tim Marks, President of EcoTech Marine. "We thank IceCap for their support over the years and are pleased to take this step forward."

The Battery Backup also now comes with two spare cables, instead of just one, allowing you to backup multiple VorTech propeller pumps or link batteries together for more run time. Additionally, we are utilizing a more powerful charger which allows for longer run-time, all while keeping the price for this accessory at its current level of $165 USD. Look for it at your favorite on-line retailers and local shops now.

Remember, it might take a typhoon to destroy a natural reef, but for our captive reefs it only takes a power outage.

I highly recommend a UPS. I've got one and it's saved me on two occasions this year so far. It's peace of mind for those unforeseen outages. A few dollars to save possibly hundreds, even thousands of dollars and not to mention lives of your little friends.

My UPS can run a k1 and a 150 heater for 3 hours. That's a good chunk of time if you regulate your tank properly during the outage.

When buying a UPS that you are going to use with a pump be sure to look for one that does not have a modified sine wave. The modified sine wave is hard on anything that is not ac/dc converted (wall warts, transformers, etc are OK to use with modified sine waves). Most cheap UPS use a modified sine wave.

A good reason not to buy cheap. Most UPS meant for servers and not home computers utilize a consitent sine wave.

Even ones meant for servers can use a modified sine wave. It's best to look at the specs rather then to assume since it's meant for servers it might be ok :) I have countless "server" UPS at our facility and every single one is a modified sine wave.

How old are they? Of all the ones I've owned, even the one now, used a consistent sine wave when converting from AC via the AVR. Weird, you and me must shop in different circles. Might be also what I consider a cheap price for a UPS versus a trash bin bargain ;D

i concur. plus alot of them make auto-trim adjustments to the line voltage which also can adjust the sine wave.

Granted these are not new units (3 or 4 years old now, with new batteries) but they were top of the line Trip-Lites (tallest pigmy in the tribe?). FWIW they came from a well known server farm that I can guarantee everyone has used at one time or another on the web.

    That's a millennium in tech years! J/K ;D

I'm glad you brought up the cheap units though. I just took a look online and never realized that some UPS's (course modified/simulated/square sine waves) are in the $100 range. Freakin weird. I think my issue was that I always expect to pay when it comes to quality so I usually just look at brands I know.

As with anything its how far you want to take it. Im sure theres some crazy guy out there with a fish tank that is primarily fed by utility power and during outages runs off of a freakin gas generator with solar powered backup or some crazy bank of fuel cells.
