    Just buy a phosban reactor and go for it. They hang on the side of the sump anyway.

    +1 they are fairly cheap.

    It's not as ideal as having it in a sump (since you could put it downstream of the other filtration), but I see no reason why it wouldn't work with it as HOB

    I have one. How do I use one without a sump (no overflow).

    Just hook it up to a pump with a ball valve so you can adjust the flow. I have a maxijet 1200 on mine and have the ball valve so I can get it to softly tumble vs. it pumping through like crazy.

    Would it need to be a submersible one? I really don't want a pump in my 20 gallon tank.

    that is your only option I believe, unless you do a sump.
