eel tank started. first question

I run both hob and skimmer in my 29g. The HOB is an aqueon 30 and it's inside my Fuge with No carbon, just a filter sponge to slow flow and catch detritus in my fuge. I run a hydror slim skim and about every four days it pulls out some thick stinky low tide smelling stuff. I would say both would be good and you could probably do a waterchange twice a month versus once a week.
