You might consider a golden dwarf moray (Gymnothorax melatremus)...they stay small (10" - 12"), and as such, can't eat medium /large tankmates. Don't confuse this fish with the golden moray (G. milaris), which gets a lot bigger.

FWIW, I kept a SFE in a reef for a number of years, but once they hit about 18" - 20", they tend to go postal on their tankmates. Mine got so bad I had to eject it from the reef, but in total I kept it for 15 years...I was bitten twice. That eel "cured" me from keeping morays, even tho I really like them.

I had a White Ribbon EEL in my tank for quite a while, it ate RODS food, and was really interesting to watch, died one day unexpectedly, but it was a really cool addition.

Your thread title sounds alot like snakes on a plane, could be a similar situation in that will hide most of the time and cause problems at other times.

what species? Usually the best candidates are crustacean eaters, like Zebra eels or Golden Dwarves. But they can still eat small fish, and can be good escape artists, and can knock stuff over.

I was just asking in general. I'm not looking to get an eel. I saw this video and that made me ask the question.

Yup. All the people i know with Moray Eels, only have BIG fish. Because everytime small fish goes in there, BOOP! They dissapear and get eaten right away. But there is a dwarf species out there, that wont eat fish as much, cant remember the name of it right now tbh, but i've seen them before, they're rather cool. Wish they were more reef safe, because they're so COOL! :O
